Evans focused on next Leeds match despite rumours

Leeds United head coach Steve Evans has told the Yorkshire Evening Post that all of his focus is on preparing the team for the game with Rotherham United after the international break. There have been strong rumours over the last few days that Evans will be replaced by owner Massimo Cellino following the heavy home defeat to local rivals Huddersfield Town.

Evans’ contract expires at the end of this season, but it was largely expected that he would earn an extension after guiding the Whites away from any relegation trouble. However more and more talk in the past few weeks suggests that may not be the case.

We covered a story recently about how the outspoken Cellino is set to dismiss Evans and make yet another managerial change at Elland Road. A foreign import was touted as a potential replacement for the Scot, whose future has been up in the air since the defeat to Brighton in February.

Cellino was in the stands at Elland Road to witness the Huddersfield match and the Italian is said to have told people around him in the crowd that a managerial change is the way forward. He is currently in Miami, whilst Evans is back at Thorp Arch making preparations for the clash against his former club.

Evans insists it is business as usual for the time being, certainly until he is told otherwise,

“I treat stories like that with the contempt they deserve. My only focus is on preparing the team for Rotherham.”

The football club haven’t commented on the speculation surrounding Evans’ future, which was also reported in the Daily Mail.

Speaking after the defeat to Huddersfield, former Crawley Town manager Evans was adamant that he had no real reason to worry for his future and that the crazy world of football management is very much and up and down phenomenon,

“I’ve got no reason to ask for guidance. When you win games, if you ask a question then people would always speak positively. If you lose a game, people would always be negative.

“You have to take it from the remit when you came in as head coach and that’s what I’m doing. I’m trying to make sure this club is a Championship club going forward and then I’ll try to build something, to put a side in place which challenges.

“It’s easy to talk, it’s harder to deliver, but as I’ve said many times I’ve got a track record which says I deliver.”

It certainly wouldn’t be a huge shock to see a managerial change over the international break at any club, especially as owners and chairman see this as a good time to make changes and allow new managers to settle into their surroundings. Certainly when it comes to Leeds and Cellino, you just don’t know what is around the corner. What we do know is that Leeds will face Rotherham in their next league match, what we don’t know is if Steve Evans will be in the Leeds United dugout.
