Derby County, after a ten minute, three-goal salvo of their own were scuttled by Rotherham yesterday, the Millers scoring three times inside the last 10 minutes to force an unthinkable draw.
When Derby scored the final of their three goals on 65 minutes couretesy of Tom Ince, who had started the scoring 10 minutes earlier, there would have been little sign of danger ahead. Derby, a more than capable unit at Championship level only had to ride out the final 25 minutes of the game and the three points were in the bag.
Or so you’d think. The Rams found themselves raided after Neil Warnock’s Rotherham smashed three goals of their own past the shell-shocked Derby team who went from all three points to a share one one point in a frantic final seven minutes of the game.
Danny Ward started the comeback with an 83rd minute goal that many, likely including most Rotherham fans, would have seen as a mere consolation and a sour cherry on top of the day’s performance at the New York Stadium. If this was to be the script, however, somebody forgot to tell 69th minute substitute Leon Best whose two goals (83′ and 90′) gave Rotherham a share of the spoils.
The manner of the comeback would have been likely enough hard to bear for die-hard Derby fans, the fact that a former Ram scored the last two goals would have been rubbing their noses in it.
Twitter is a good place to find fan reaction at times like this; after Derby’s capitulation and shipping of three goals in the last seven minutes, this hasn’t changed. Derby fans have been quick to point the finger and equally to vent their spleens.
