Sheffield United sign experienced Middlesbrough defender

Nigel Adkins has strengthened his squad with the loan signing of experienced Championship defender, Alex Baptiste.

Sheffield United have completed a deal to bring Middlesbrough’s Alex Baptiste to Bramall Lane on a 93-day emergency loan and the versatile defender is eligible for their big game against Burton Albion.

The 30-year-old joined Middlesbrough in the summer of 2015 from Bolton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee, having impressed whilst on-loan at Blackburn Rovers during the 2014-15 campaign.

But 20 minutes into his Middlesbrough debut he suffered a double leg fracture in a pre-season friendly against York City and has subsequently not featured for the Championship promotion-chasers this season.

Having played over 150 times for Mansfield Town, Baptiste joined Blackpool in 2008 and was part of the Tangerines squad that won promotion to the Premiership under Ian Holloway.

He enjoyed a season in the top-flight with Blackpool, making over 170 appearances at Bloomfield Road in total and has proved himself at Championship level for a number of years since.

Blades boss Nigel Adkins told www.sufc.co.uk on Tuesday: “We are delighted to be able to bring Alex in. He’s a vastly experienced performer who can operate in a number of positions. Following an injury, he is now fit and raring to go and will make a valuable contribution in the remaining months of the season.”
