Blackpool apologise for ‘unintentional’ song choice

League 1 strugglers Blackpool have issued a public apology after ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’ was played over the tannoy at yesterday’s match against Bradford City at Bloomfield Road according to The Guardian.

The 1989 hit by Billy Joel is understood to have caused anger and upset amongst some Bradford City supporters with the song bringing back memories of the Valley Parade fire disaster in 1985.

On 11 May 1985 The Bantams played Lincoln City in a Division Three match at Valley Parade. At 3.40pm with the scores tied at 0-0, a small fire was reported in the stand and within minutes due to the windy conditions the fire engulfed the whole stand resulting in 56 people losing their lives and leaving at least 265 injured. The fire is believed to have been started by a lit cigarette being dropped down the wooden main stand.

Each year the West Yorkshire club remember those who lost their lives and the heroes who tried to save others on that fateful day almost 31 years ago. Last May the city marked the 30th anniversary of the fire with a special remembrance service.

Following yesterday’s blunder at Bloomfield Road, Blackpool have issued a public apology for their ‘unintentional’ song choice and have apologised for any upset which the song caused.

Bradford City won the match 1-0 with a second half strike from Kyel Reid.
