Barton on why he wouldn’t join Leeds United

In an interview with Radio Yorkshire, ex-Leeds United head coach Neil Redfearn said that he’d contacted a quartet of players who would have made Leeds into possible promotion contenders.

Redfearn went on to say in the interview that his ‘list’ was passed on, but his eventual dismissal from his role at Elland Road somehow led to the club missing out on these players.

One of the players on the list was Joey Barton, a player let go by QPR during the summer and one who garnered a lot of debate on social media as to whether Leeds should go out and attempt to sign him, a signing of a quality player with a proven track record. In the end it didn’t come off with Barton signing on at Burnley just before the 2015/16 Championship campaign kicked off.

However, Joey Barton himself took to social media, in particular Twitter, to distance himself from the claims made by Neil Redfearn that contact has been made between Leeds United and himself over a potential move to Elland Road. Barton didn’t suggest that Redfearn was ‘spinning’ the truth, indeed he went as far as to say in one of his Tweets, “Not calling Neil a liar but he never spoke directly to me. Or anyone close to me to the best of my knowledge.”

Barton then went on to tantalisingly say that there could very well have been interest in him from joining but only under certain parameters,

However, in the following Tweet, Barton indicates that there was one very big, and to be fair inescapable, factor that ultimately would have stopped him considering becoming a Leeds United player: the off-field circus that comes with the club.

Barton finished his short denouement of his position in regards to the ‘could have joined Leeds rumours’ by saying that he wishes “Leeds Utd and Neil all the best for the future. Hope that clears it up.”
