Karlan Ahearne-Grant

Striker back at Charlton after Cambridge loan

Cambridge United manager Shaun Derry has confirmed that Karlan Ahearne-Grant has returned to Charlton Athletic following the completion of his loan spell. He also confirmed that the U’s will not be approaching the Championship strugglers to extend the loan either.

The 18-year-old made three appearances during his time at the Abbey Stadium, starting one of those games, that coming against Hartlepool United in January.

Ex-Notts County boss Derry said that the move ‘didn’t quite happen’ for Ahearne-Grant, who now returns to The Valley. The Addicks introduced the youngster into the first-team fold last season, but enjoyed a decent run in the side earlier in the season. He started seven Championship games and made ten more appearances from the bench, scoring once in the away defeat to Cardiff City.

Derry says that Ahearne-Grant shouldn’t be too disheartened by this loan move away, insisting that he is still a talented individual,

“It just didn’t quite happen for Karlan here, but he’s a good player and I’m sure he’ll do a great job at another club.”

Ahearne-Grant is unlikely to force his way back into the Charlton starting line-up any time soon however, as it was Jose Riga would elected to send him out on loan. He hasn’t featured for the first-team since late December, but the youngster still has a bright future ahead of him.
