Portsmouth continue chase of Wednesday striker

League 2 promotion chasers Portsmouth are continuing to chase the signing of Sheffield Wednesday striker Caolan Lavery according to The Portsmouth News.

The 23 year old netted 4 goals in 13 matches during a successful recent loan spell at Fratton Park and it is understood that Pompey Manager Paul Cook is keen for The Owls striker to return to the club.

Lavery is out of contract in the summer however Sheffield Wednesday are keen to tie the player down with a new contract forcing any interested club to pay a fee for the player.

Portsmouth’s Chief Executive Mark Catlin has confirmed the club’s continued interest in the striker but admits that  the player’s future depends upon parent club Sheffield Wednesday.

“The ball is in their court, as it has been for a while” Catlin told The Portsmouth News.

“Paul has looked to bring back Caolan and, backing our manager as we always do, we have explored that option.”

“However, it is entirely down to the player, his agent and the club.”

“Let’s not forget, this is Sheffield Wednesday’s player and they can handle him as they see fit.”

“We haven’t given up hope of bringing Caolan back, but it has proven to be difficult.”

Portsmouth already have 5 players on loan at Fratton Park, the maximum number which are permitted to be named in a match day squad. Should Lavery return to Fratton Park on a loan arrangement, Manager Paul Cook will need to carefully juggle his loan playing resources to abide by Football League rules.
