Crawley extend loan of Crewe midfielder

Crawley Town have extended the loan of English loanee midfielder Chris Atkinson until March 9.

Atkinson had signed with the League Two side initially on a one-month-deal on January 14, however Reds boss Mark Yates has successfully negotiated an extension that will see the 23-year-old remain at Broadfield Stadium for a further month.

Under manager Steve Davis, Atkinson was considered a starter for League One side Crewe in the opening weeks of the 2015/16 season. Despite this, the midfielder would eventually fall out of favour at the club, finding it difficult to receive significant playing time by November.

As a result, Atkinson was loaned out to Crawley in the tier below, and has made four appearances for the club so far. The Englishman’s play has impressed Crawley boss Mark Yates sufficiently enough to warrant a loan extension, meaning that Atkinson will remain at the club for a further month.

Speaking to Crawley’s club website, Yates commented on Atkinson’s loan extension.

“It’s great to have Chris for a further month. I think the more he has played for us the better he has been and I thought he was excellent on Saturday against Stevenage.

“With three players still injured we are a little light on numbers at the moment and Chris will have an important part to play for us over the next few weeks.”

Crawley currently lie 15th in League Two, nine points outside of the coveted playoff places. The Reds will be hoping that loanee Atkinson can help propel his side to within reach of the playoffs before returning back to his parent club Crewe.
