Bolton chairman passes away after cancer battle

It has been confirmed that Bolton Wanderers Chairman Phil Gartside has sadly passed away following a short and brave battle with cancer. The official club website confirmed the news this afternoon.

The long-standing club legend has been associated with all things Bolton since being appointed to the board in 1988. He dies at the age of 63.

Vice Chairman Brett Warburton passed on the news, saying that it is a sad day for everyone involved,

“Phil has been a personal friend for over 30 years and this is a very sad day for everybody associated with Bolton Wanderers.
“On behalf of Eddie Davies, the board and everyone associated with the club we send our deepest condolences to all Phil’s family and ask that their privacy is respected during what is a difficult time for all involved.”
Having joined the club in 1988, one year later he became the club chairman. Over that period, the football club have enjoyed several highs. Those include a Play-Off Final victory to gain promotion into the Premier League, top-eight finishes in the top flight for four consecutive seasons, as well as two UEFA Cup ventures.
The club have been trying to secure new ownership considering the drastic financial situation. Considering Gartside’s health, it was decided that Trevor Birch, a football finance executive, would oversee the process as owner Eddie Davies looks to sell.
Gartside was understandably a huge presence around the football club, and the football community in general. Everyone at The72 would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to Phil’s family and friends during this sad time.
RIP Phil Gartside (1952-2016)
