Mirco Antenucci: Leeds, wife, homesickness and Italian interest

They say that behind every great man is a great woman and that is proving to be the case with Leeds United striker Mirco Antenucci and his wife Sofia, according to a brief report in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Citing a report in Italian media outlet Ternana News, the YEP’s Amitai Winehouse says that “Antenucci is thought to be happy at Leeds but could return to Italy in the summer after the birth of his second child.”

Antenucci and his family have been in Leeds for 18 months, after the bearded striker signed from Italian side Ternana, but with the birth of their daughter, it is thought that Antenucci’s wife has returned to Italy to lay the basis of a new life. It is also thought that Antenucci’s agent has been tasked with sounding out Italian clubs with the possibility of bringing Mirco back into Italian football when his contract ends at Elland Road at the end of this current season.

Ternana News also report that his old team made a definite expression of interest in bringing Mirco back to the Rossoverdi, but the striker himself knocked the proposed deal back. The article said that Ternana’s president Longarini personally sought out the Leeds striker around January 15 and asked whether he’d consider coming back to the Stadio Libero Liberati.

It is thought that the figures discussed were too high for Ternana to consider, with Ternana News indicating that Antenucci is on a salary of around €500,000 per season at Leeds United. With Ternana not being able to match that sum, it is thought that the offer from Ternana was too low – Ternana News mentioning a net sum of €80,000 with other clauses added. On this point, Antenucci is said to be loathe to accept such a reduction in wage but others in Italy’s lower tiers are said to be interested including Pescara, Foggia, Ascoli and Novara.

Mirco Antenucci is somewhat a much-liked figure amongst the Leeds fans on the terraces and was the club’s leading scorer lasr term with ten goals. So far this campaign, in what could be his swansong season in English football, the bearded Italian has scored five goals and provided two assists for teammates in the 27 appearances (12 starts) that he has made for Leeds United.
