Marcus Olsson

Derby close in on deal for Blackburn full back

The Lancashire Telegraph is reporting that Derby County are closing in on the signing of left back Markus Olsson from Blackburn Rovers. Last season’s Player of  the Season at Ewood Park has recently lost his place in the team to Tommy Spurr and Paul Clement has been desperate to bolster this position since the season-ending injury to Craig Forsyth.

The 27-year-old has six months remaining on his current deal but they are set to pocket a fee which could rise into the region of £1million for the two-cap Sweden international. The player had been in discussions with the Lancashire club to sign an extended deal prior to Paul Lambert’s appointment as manager, however a move to the iPro Stadium is very near to completion.

Lambert did reveal that Olsson had indeed been left out of the side in recent times not only so he could get a first look at what Spurr can bring to the team, but because there had been interest in the player,

“Obviously Markus is out of contract and, if we get the money, then it’s going to be a really good deal for the club because he is out of contract and he can walk away for nothing (in the summer).

The money is good for somebody who is going to be out of contract.”

The former Norwich City and Aston Villa manager went on to say that should Olsson leave the club then signing a new left back will firmly go onto his wish-list for the remainder of this transfer window. He was also unwilling to lay any blame at any corner over the failure to agree terms with the player over a new contract. The transfer is expected to go through later this week. Tonight, Derby travel to Burnley.
