Birmingham City 3 Ipswich Town 0 – Match Report

Birmingham City gained an advantage over Ipswich Town in the Championship Play Off race after recording a superb 3-0 victory over The Tractor Boys at St Andrews on Saturday afternoon.

The result sees The Blues leapfrog Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town into seventh place in the Championship table and the club now sit outside the Play Off places on goal difference.

Sunderland loanee Will Buckley opened the scoring in the 23rd minute for The Blues, scoring for the club on his debut when he slotted home from close range. A tight first half ended on a sour note when Ipswich Town midfielder Jonathan Douglas was dismissed for a rash challenge on Buckley deep into stoppage time.

The ten men struggled to cope with second half pressure applied by Gary Rowett’s Birmingham City side and The Blues gained a two goal lead when Jon Toral volleyed in a superb strike in the 54th minute. The Blues put the game well beyond the visitors in the 70th minute when Maikel Kieftenbeld scored a third with an accurate shot from the edge of the box.

Ipswich Town’s defeat at St Andrews was the club’s first away defeat in eight matches and the club will look to bounce back from the heavy defeat when they host Reading at Portman Road in ten days time.
