Brighton coach set for first management job at Luton

There are strong rumours suggesting that Brighton & Hove Albion first-team coach Nathan Jones is set for his first steps into management with League Two Luton Town. Betting has been suspended on him being the successor to John Still, who was sacked a few weeks ago.

After playing over 150 times for Brighton as a player, Jones returned to the club in a coaching capacity in 2013, working under then head coach Oscar Garcia. He has since worked alongside Sami Hyypia and most recently Chris Hughton. After being promoted to assistant manager under Hyypia, the introduction of Colin Calderwood led to him returning to his first-team coach role.

The 42-year spent most of his playing career at Yeovil Town, which is where he ended his playing career. In his final few seasons, he combined playing with being assistant manager alongside Terry Skiverton and then first-team coach to Gary Johnson. After a brief spell with Charlton Athletic with their Under-21 side, he returned to Brighton.

His price was as big as 20/1 this morning with most bookmakers, but that was soon slashed to 1/10 after a flurry of betting activity that supported the likelihood of him becoming the next Hatters boss.

Welshman Jones is no stranger to Kenilworth Road as he actually started his professional career with the club, but failed to make a first-team appearance before moving back to his native Wales with Merthyr Tydfil.

For a long time it seemed as though David James was set to be handed the reigns after strong links pushing him towards the position. Nevertheless, it would appear Jones is the man Luton want to guide them back up the League Two table. They are 15th at the moment, and as they are without a game this weekend, it presents the perfect time to appoint a new manager. Jones’ first game would be the home clash with Cambridge United on January 16.
