OPINION: Departure of Nick Blackman

On Wednesday morning, the transfer of Nick Blackman to Derby County was made official, for a fee expected to be in the region of £2.5 million with the potential to rise to £3 million.

He has been Reading’s stand out performer for the whole season, scoring 13 and assisting 7 in all competitions, he will evidently be a huge loss for the Royals.

I know that Blackman was out of contract in the summer, and some may believe that £2.5 million isn’t bad for a player with only 6 months left on his contract. However, I fail to see how selling your best player half way through the season shows anything but a lack of ambition and optimism.

Reading are nowhere near out of the race for a play off position. As everybody knows, all it takes in the Championship is 3 or 4 wins on the spin and your suddenly back in contention, and Reading have already proved this season that are clearly capable of going toe to toe with the best in the division, and one of the main reasons for that was the form of Nick Blackman.

Now Blackman has gone, Vydra and Sa, among others, need to stand up and be counted and start scoring goals because without Blackman’s goals this season, Reading would be joint 20th, and you felt that if Reading were going to mount another play off push, then Blackman’s goals would be vitally important, but now without Blackman, I fail to see where the goals to do that will come from.

Some fans have gone on on social media about how Blackman was too selfish and arrogant and that his ego had to be gotten rid of.

I beg to differ with this and believe that his arrogance and supposed selfishness are his greatest assets, and what makes him the player he is. I’ve always seen the talent in Blackman, and remember him producing a brilliant performance against Forest in the 2013/14 season that I believed would kickstart his Reading career.

It’s a huge shame that McDermott then Adkins then Clarke never really gave him a run in the side earlier than this season, because all he needed was 3 or 4 running games and he became Reading’s best player.

Would love to hear fellow Reading FC fans views on the departure of Blackman!
