Wigan to sign ex-Liverpool trialist

Wigan Athletic will sign ex-Liverpool trialist Dan Lavercombe, according to HITC Sport.

The 19 year old Torquay United goalkeeper had a trial at Liverpool after impressing for Torquay, after breaking into the first team.

HITC Sport now understand that he will sign for League One side Wigan Athletic. He broke into the Torquay side at the back end of last season and impressed with three clean sheets in five games.

He has made 11 appearances this season for The Gulls, keeping two clean sheets.

Lavercombe has attracted interest from higher up the footballing pyramid, including his trial at Liverpool, and Torquay have been resigned to losing him for a while.

Bolton took him on trial in November and were keen to complete a deal, although the move never materialised.

Wigan have acted quickly at the start of the January transfer window and are set to complete a deal for Lavercombe, before loaning the young prospect back to Torquay.

Wigans fall from the Premier League has been well documented in recent years, but they will be hoping that this is the season that they start to climb the footballing ladder again.

They lie fifth in League One after 24 games, four points into the play offs.
