Just because he’s a defender, doesn’t mean he didn’t mean it
When Danny Webber rolled a pass to Peter Murphy, most people in the ground would not have expected him to shoot from over 30 yards out. But that’s exactly what he did. The result? A looping, curling thing of beauty from the Accrington defender that ended up in the top corner of John Sullivan’s net. Such a goal so similar to Ronaldinho’s in 2002 (apart from that fact it wasn’t from a dead ball) left Twitter in clear disagreement over whether he meant it or not. For our money, it was well and truly meant.
Mansfield fans aren’t inspired
It’s been five long years since Mansfield Town were last in the Football League and those interested could be forgiven for thinking Field Mill would be near to a sell-out this weekend against Exeter. But just 3874 turned up to The Stags’ first game of the season, not much more than 1,000 over last years average in the Conference. Clearly such lacklustre off the field figures had an effect on the field as both teams played out a 0-0 draw. Paul Cox will be hoping things turn around quickly for his men as the fans don’t seem t be the most forgiving bunch.
Newport County were unlucky
An impressive 4-1 victory on the first day of the season was not to be followed up with another 3 points for Newport who lose away at Northampton. But Justin Edinburgh can count his side very unlucky not to take anything from the game following another good performance. The Ironsides had 17 shots to Northampton’s and took 10 corner to The Cobblers’ 1 yet still ended up losing 3-1. There was no room for sympathy from Edinburgh however after he told the BBC that, ‘If you don’t take your chances you’ve got to make sure you don’t give easy chances away.’
