Chelsea’s Swift extends Brentford loan

Brentford have confirmed that Chelsea midfielder John Swift has extended his loan deal with the club until the end of the season. The youngster has impressed since linking up with the Griffin Park club in October.

20-year-old Swift has featured 15 times in the Championship for the Bees, scoring three goals in the process against Charlton Athletic, Bolton Wanderers and most recently Cardiff City. He has mostly featured as part of a front three, first under Lee Carsley and then under Dean Smith when he moved to the club from League One high-flyers Walsall. Smith was delighted to extend the loan deal,

“John has developed a lot as a player in his time with Brentford. He is someone I knew about when he was playing in League One last year and he has improved since then. He also has lots of scope to develop further. It is great to have him as part of the squad for the rest of the season.”

Swift has featured regularly for the England national team as youth levels and in November made his Under-21 debut in a Championship qualifier against Switzerland.

The Brentford number 19 has only featured once for the Chelsea first team when appearing as a late substitute in the 2-1 away victory over Cardiff City towards the end of the 2013/14 season. Loan spells with Rotherham United, Swindon Town and then Brentford soon followed.
