Liam Trotter has returned to Bolton Wanderers following the completion of his loan spell at Championship rivals Nottingham Forest. He comes back to boost options for Neil Lennon in the midfield position.

The 27-year-old is expected to be involved for this weekend’s FA Cup clash and potential banana-skin away to National League side Eastleigh. He comes back to Macron Stadium with his side struggling at the bottom of the Championship and suffered a 2-0 home reverse to Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Trotter featured nine times for the City Ground club, with the highlight undoubtedly being on his debut when scoring a last minute equaliser against former club and hometown team Ipswich Town.

The combative midfield player has had several loan spells throughout his career so far. Twice did he move to Millwall, before eventually penning a permanent deal in 2010. Brief stints at Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United came early in his playing days, before joining Bolton Wanderers, also on loan, in 2014. The move was eventually made permanent, when he signed a three-year contract.

It remains to be seen if he’ll come straight back into Lennon’s starting eleven. There is a good chance that he will be involved in most matchday squads but it has been a struggle to name a settled side this season for Wanderers.
