League 2 promotion chasers Plymouth Argyle are understood to be interested in a January transfer deal for experienced veteran midfielder Alan Smith, according to the Nottingham Post.

Smith has almost 500 senior appearances to his name in a glittering career which has seen the West Yorkshireman represent big clubs Leeds United, Manchester United and Newcastle United and also play for his country at senior level.

The 35-year-old signed for then League 1 club Notts County in May 2014 and the midfielder has made 16 appearances for The Magpies to date this season but is yet to score for the Meadow Lane club.

Having lost in the League 2 Play Off Semi Finals last season, Plymouth Argyle are aiming to go one better this season under new Manager Derek Adams with the club chasing automatic promotion and possibly the league title.

The Pilgrims have been in the top 3 for large spells of the season so far and do not look like surrendering their chances of automatic promotion any time soon.

It is understood that Arygle are looking to sign a player who would bring additional experience and organisation to the squad in the January transfer window and Manager Derek Adams has singled out Alan Smith as the man to bring those additional qualities to his side.
