Gills fear loss of key player could be crucial

Gillingham have just revealed that centre forward Cody McDonald, who they feared was injured in a clash with Millwall keeper Jordan Archer, is out for some time. The injury, that led to his substitution, has apparently been confirmed as a broken metatarsal, according to a club Tweet (below).

McDonald, scorer of three goals for the Gills this season, was injured in a clash with Millwall’s keeper, Jordan Archer that saw the striker taken off injured, the foul itself leading to this dismissal of the Millwall keeper and Gillingham scoring from the resulting spot-kick. After the game, Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh said, “It seized up at half time and we will have to assess that.”

McDonald, who once commanded a transfer fee of £315,000 when moving from Norwich to Coventry in 2011, will be out for a decent stretch and will surely be missed by the Gills. Whilst only scoring three times this season in 19 appearances, last season the striker notched 16 League One goals and laid on six assists which folowed a similar goal haul of 17 goals during the 2013/14 season. In all, McDonald has scored 67 goals in his Gillingham career, the most profitable season beaing in 2010/11 when, whilst on loan from Norwich, he smashed 25 goals in League Two.
