Appleton: “A big game for all concerned”

Oxford United Head Coach Michael Appleton has told the club’s official website that he is looking for his side to build on their eleven game unbeaten run as they make the short journey to Wycombe Wanderers this Saturday.

The U’s will be backed by a sold-out away following at Adams Park as they look to repeat their win there last season.

“It was a great game for everyone concerned last year,” said Appleton. “It’s another sell out this weekend which all of the staff and players are excited about. I have no doubts that come the end of the season Wycombe are going to be there or thereabouts. They win a lot of games by the odd goal and they did that last season as well. We are mindful that it is a big game for all concerned.”

Oxford have been boosted with the return of striker Ryan Taylor to training this week following a groin injury. However, Appleton revealed that he has been impressed with Rotherham forward Chris Maguire in Taylor’s absence.

“Chris has settled quickly and I think he was the pick of the bunch last Saturday” he said. “He was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet again and I thought he showed the class that we know he has. The game on Saturday might come a little bit too quick for Ryan but the good thing is he should be around for the Exeter and Yeovil games over Christmas.”

With three games in quick succession Appleton will be looking to utilise all of his squad, and going into Christmas with no injuries puts them in a strong position.

“I think with the game on Boxing Day and on the 28th it is very similar to the week we just had with games Sunday, Tuesday Saturday. But I feel we have the squad to deal with that situation, and that little bit of quality. People will get opportunities and it’s up to them when they do to make sure they do the job for the club.”
