Gray joins Fulham backroom staff

Stuart Gray will take charge of Fulham in their London derby against Brentford this weekend, although the club are still searching for a first team head coach, reports the BBC.

The Cottagers have appointed ex-Wednesday boss Gray in a senior coaching role but the club insist that they are still searching for a permanent head coach.

Gray’s assistant on Saturday will be Steve Wigley, whilst Peter Grant, who had been in charge, will go back to his old post at Under-21s boss.

Fulham have been searching for a new boss since sacking Kit Symons and November 8.

They held talks with then Reading boss Steve Clarke, who rejected the club, only for The Royals to sack him last week.

Fulham’s Chief Football Officer Mike Rigg told the clubs official website:

“The search for a permanent head coach goes on, but it is important to ensure we focus fully on getting results back on track while this process continues.”

Gray was sacked by Sheffield Wednesday in June after 18 months at the club, and replaced by Carlos Carvahal.

Gray has also managed Southampton and Northampton in his managerial career, as well as having caretaker spells in charge of Villa, Wolves, Burnley and Portsmouth.

His Owls’ successor Carvahal has seen great success in his short time at the club with a defeat over Arsenal in the Capital One Cup and with the club pushing for the play offs.

Rigg added that “Stuart has a proven track record in both coaching and management.”

“He also had a full season in charge at Sheffield Wednesday and secured their highest finish for six years, along with a record number of clean sheets.”

“We all know that we have suffered from defensive frailties all season and Stuart will be focusing on that straight away.”

“He has first-hand knowledge of the Championship and knows how to get the very best out of a group of players.”

Fulham have been disappointing so far this season and currently lie in 16th in The Sky Bet Championship.
