Lennon laments failure to take chances

Bolton Wanderers manager Neil Lennon is of the opinion that missed chances was the reason why they lost to Cardiff City yesterday. The defeat leaves them bottom of the Championship table and are now without a victory in their last 13 matches.

Although they twice came from behind to level the scores at Macron Stadium yesterday afternoon, they couldn’t continue the momentum gained from doing so, plus failed to keep their opponents at bay. The Trotters have only managed to keep five clean sheets all season long but Lennon highlighted their lack of composure in front of goal to take more of their chances. That is why they have the worst scoring record in the division. The former Celtic boss told the official club website that his side simply must improve,

“I feel we should have won the game. We’ve missed a hatful of simple chances and we have to do better in the final third.

The goals we gave away were far too simple for my liking, but in the end it feels like a game where we’ve snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

I did feel we should have had a penalty in the second half when Liam Feeney was brought down in the area, but after speaking to the referee he didn’t seem to think there was enough contact.”

Although the team are four points from safety, Lennon insists that there were some positives to some out of their performance against Cardiff and certainly cannot accuse the players of a lack of effort,

“There isn’t a lack of effort or character right now, we just need that little bit of cutting edge in front of goal. There’s no recipe to improve things. We just have to keep going and take the positives from the game.”

Things unfortunately don’t get any easier for Lennon and his Bolton side. Forgetting the off-the-field dramas that they are currently experiencing, leading to them not being paid wages for the month of November, next weekend they travel to promotion contenders Hull City before travelling to fellow  bottom three side Charlton Athletic three days later.
