Byram turns down new Leeds contract offer

Sam Byram has rejected the offer of a new contract from Leeds United according to Yorkshire Evening Post’s chief football writer Phil Hay. The right-sided player now almost seems certain to leave Elland Road once his contract expires at the end of this season.

The 22-year-old is said to have turned down what was believed to be a fresh one-year contract, which also was on the same wage that he currently earns. Speculation has been rife for some time regarding his future and for a little while now it has looked increasingly likely that he will be playing his football elsewhere next season, or even as early as this January.

Byram started the season in the team under Uwe Rosler, before losing his place towards the end of the German’s tenure and has barely featured since Steve Evans took the helm with the Yorkshire side. The youngster has featured over 100 times for the club, but doesn’t seem likely to add to his appearance tally any time soon.

Earlier this season owner Massimo Cellino publicly lambasted Byram, saying that he was ‘deeply offended’ and ‘hurt’ that he wasn’t prepared to sign a new contract with the club he has been involved with since 2005.

A few months ago the full back was said to be linked to several Premier League clubs, shedding further speculation that he could be set to leave the club. However with Evans clearly only interested in concerning himself with players that still want to play for Leeds United, it seems that Byram’s long association with the football club is set to come to a fairly bitter and distasteful conclusion.
