Adkins wants cup win to boost Blades’ league form

Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins says he hopes a win in the FA Cup this weekend can serve as a catalyst to improve their woeful league form. He told the official club website that only hard work will see them improve.

As usual, the Blades started the season as one of the favourites to earn promotion out of League One and back into the Championship. However after 20 games they find themselves in mid-table, some six points behind Peterborough United who occupy the final play-off position. They haven’t recorded a victory since the last round of the FA Cup when beating non-league Worcester City 3-0. They haven’t won a League One game since a 3-0 success over Fleetwood Town.

Adkins, who has achieved promotion out of this league with both Scunthorpe United and Southampton, is hoping that victory over Oldham Athletic in the cup this weekend could spark their league form back to life,

“We need a catalyst, but we are all pulling in the same direction and the harder we work for each other the better opportunity we have of turning things round.

Saturday’s game is the most important one now because it’s the next challenge in front of us and a win against Oldham would give everyone a boost ahead of what is another hectic month.”

Saturday’s clash at Bramall Lane will be the second tie both sides have met this season. October’s league encounter at Boundary Park ended in a 1-1 draw, and neither manager would relish a replay in what is already a very demanding December. The Latics are positioned in the League One relegation places, so only a victory will be accepted by the Bramall Lane faithful.
