Derby bid for Championship midfielder rejected

Derby have had a bid for Marcus Olsson rejected by Blackburn, according to TEAMtalk.

The Rams have been keeping a close eye on Olsson and were ready to pounce for the midfielder (who can also play in defence) before the loan window closed.

With Craig Forsyth ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury, Derby were looking at potential replacements for the defender and the 27-year old was one of their main targets.

However, the move has been scuppered, with new boss Paul Lambert unwilling to let the Sweden man leave Ewood Park.

Plus, with the loan window now closed, there is no chance of any further bids being made or any deals taking place until January.

The offer made by the Rams was a loan-to-buy offer – Derby were hoping to land Olsson on loan until January and then snap him up on a permanent basis when the window opens. However, Blackburn have rejected the approach and the midfielder will be staying put, with the club eager to keep hold of one of their main players.

Olsson has been a key figure for Rovers over the course of the past few seasons. This year he has featured 13 times already, while he played a total of 45 games for the Ewood Park side last season and was named the club’s player of the year.

However, despite his fantastic performances and his versatility (he can play in defence or midfield) he has yet to be tied down to a new deal and his current contract expires next summer. If Blackburn don’t extend his current deal, then he could leave for absolutely nothing at the end of the current campaign and it may mean that Derby get their man for free if they play the waiting game. Therefore, they’ll either want to agree a new contract with him soon or they could even cash in on him in January. As for now though, it looks Lambert wants him to remain a Blackburn player.
