Charlton Athletic captain Johnnie Jackson has heaped praise on young defender Tareiq Holmes-Dennis after his display in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Birmingham, say the South London Press.
20-year-old Holmes-Dennis deputised for Chris Solly, who was not risked on his return from a knee injury, and the young full-back supplied the cross for Jackson’s headed winner at St Andrew’s.
Skipper Jackson was impressed with both Holmes-Dennis and young striker Ademola Lookman, 18, who was handed his first start.
Jackson said; “Tareiq’s performance all round on the day was magnificent. That block at the end denied a certain goal. That is what you want from a defender – going forward is a bonus. So to set up the goal was brilliant, it shows both sides of the game.”
On Lookman, Jackson commented; “I’m really pleased for him. He is a nice young lad who has shown a lot of flashes of his ability.
Jackson powered onto Holmes-Dennis’ right-wing delivery to head in his third goal of the campaign and his 50th for the Addicks.
He said: “The lads were giving me a bit of stick in the dressing room because I don’t score with my feet – I don’t care how they come. I’m just proud to get my 50th goal for the club.”
