Bolton set to sign non-league keeper after trial

Bolton Wanderers are closing in on the signing of Torquay United goalkeeper Dan Lavercombe. The 19-year-old has been on trial with the Championship side, and seems to have done enough to impress manager Neil Lennon.

Torquay manager Kevin Nicholson however warned that any potential deal would have to suit all parties, not just the player and Bolton, as he spoke to the BBC,

“If it happens, the deal has to suit both clubs and suit Dan.

He’s a young man with a fantastic future ahead of him.”

A loan deal, with a view to it being made permanent in January, is set to be penned in the coming days. The young keeper has featured nine times for the Devon-based club. This season has had made four appearances with the Gulls, most recently in last week’s 4-0 away defeat to Barrow.

Torquay have had to endure some financial difficulties this season, plus they are situated inside the relegation places in the National League. Some small financial rest bite will be most welcome, however Bolton themselves clearly have issues of their own regarding money.

Nicholson is of the impression that he has clearly made a big impression during his short time with the Macron Stadium outfit. He also revealed that Bolton beat off the attentions of other league clubs to lure him to a trial,

“The reports I’ve had is that he’s done very well up there. They’re very keen on him so we’ll wait and see.

He’s attracted interest off one or two clubs and Bolton have got first go at it if they want.”

Over the summer Lavercombe had a trial with Premier League giants Liverpool, when being invited to have a one-week spell with the Anfield club. Clearly he is standing off whenever he takes the field for Torquay, considering the vast amount of higher-league interest in the inexperienced shotstopper.
