A look at Blackburn Rovers and Paul Lambert

Blackburn Rovers have today appointed Paul Lambert as the team’s new manager, the club’s official website have confirmed.

There had been much speculation since Gary Bowyer’s sacking that Lambert was going to be the man to come in and today the appointment has been confirmed.

Blackburn owners Venky’s decided to sack Bowyer last week after a disappointing start to the season, leaving the club in 16th place with only three wins from 16 games this season.  Bowyer had been in charge for two-and-a-half years at Rovers and achieved finishes of 8th and 9th place in his two full seasons at the club.

However off-the-field matters at Blackburn were also playing a part during this time, with the club placed under transfer embargo in December 2014, making it hard to make additions to the squad.

Venky’s are hoping that this embargo will be lifted before the January transfer window, meaning Lambert will have the option of bringing in some new faces for a promotion push.  This was believed to be one of the most important factors for the former Aston Villa manager, along with the news that he won’t be forced to sell any players.

This could be bad news for Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday, with both clubs having been linked with star striker Jordan Rhodes.  Rhodes, who has eight league goals this season, will no doubt be key for what Lambert has planned for Blackburn.

Lambert was also reportedly impressed with the ambition of the owners and the training facilities at Blackburn, which were state-of-the-art and on-par with any club in Europe when former owner Jack Walker had them built in 2001.

Since his departure from Aston Villa, Lambert has spent time travelling around Europe watching training at top sides such as Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid, gaining more experience as a coach.

Before taking over at Norwich City in 2009, Lambert was in charge of Colchester United.  Despite being at the club for less than a year, he guided the club to a solid mid-table finish.  Lambert’s other Football League job came at Wycombe Wanderers from 2006-2008.  He led the team to the semi-final of the League Cup but resigned the season after when Wycombe were knocked out of the League Two play-offs.

Lambert has been given the same target at Blackburn as at some of his previous clubs; to win promotion.  The manager has brought in former Rovers youth coach Alan Irvine to help him achieve this goal.

Other names were mentioned for the job but the Venky’s have got their man in Paul Lambert and they believe he can take the club back up to the top flight where fans say Blackburn Rovers belong.
