League One duo considered for Brentford job

Brentford have highlighted Walsall manager Dean Smith and Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh as potential candidates to take over from caretaker Lee Carsley at the end of the season. Sky Sports understands that these two, and one unnamed manager, that is in employment, may become their future boss.

Carsley was appointed as the interim head coach at Griffin Park until the end of the season following the dismissal of Marinus Djikhuizen late in September. Despite their impressive resurgence in form, Carsley has stated on many occasions that he isn’t interested in continuing in charge beyond the end of the season. As such, Brentford are scouring the managerial market in search of their next manager.

44-year-old Smith, who began his playing career at Walsall as a player, has been at the helm of the Bescot Stadium side since January 2011. He has overseen a steady progression at the club season-by-season. So far in this campaign, he has guided the Saddlers to the summit of League One and led to them their first ever Wembley final last season in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. He has also been the subject of approaches from other clubs, including earlier this season from Rotherham United.

Former Tottenham Hotspur left back Edinburgh has been with the Kent club since February of this year. Prior to this he won the Conference National Manager of the Year Award when gaining promotion into the Football League with Newport County after a Play-Off Final victory over Wrexham. He too led Gillingham to the top of League One earlier this season and they are firmly in a promotion push so far in this campaign.

It remains to be seen who the other unnamed manager is, although it is believed to be a foreign in charge of a British club. There is every chance that this could be Burton Albion boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who has been linked with several vacancies throughout the course of this season.
