Ex-Chelsea doctor linked to Championship role

Former Chelsea First-Team Doctor Eva Carneiro could be offered a route back into football with Championship side Charlton Athletic. The Evening Standard believes that The Addicks want the 42-year-old to join up with their current medical team at The Valley.

The Gibraltar-born Nottingham University graduate was originally appointed to work with the Chelsea first-team back in 2011 when given the role by André Vilas-Boas, then going on to work under Roberto Di Matteo, Rafa Benitez and most recently Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho took exception to Carneiro, along with Head Physio Jon Fearn, when the pair ran onto to the pitch to provide treatment to Eden Hazard in a Premier League game against Swansea City. The Blues were already down to ten men at the time, and treating Hazard meant that he would briefly be forced off the field of play, meaning they were then down to nine players.

The under-fire Portuguese heavily criticised the pair, not allowing them to sit on the bench for the foreseeable future. Fearn has since returning to the club, however Carneiro has since departed the club and has since lodged a claim for constructive dismissal. Her taking this case to an employment tribunal means that she is unable to get back into work until the resolution of the case.

Charlton have expressed an interest in providing Carneiro with a pathway back into football, although they may be forced to bide their time. She has since rejected severance package offers by Chelsea after officially departing her role at Stamford Bridge in September. The story surrounding her departure attracted national headlines, leading to heavy criticism of Mourinho from the likes of Football Association Chairman Greg Duke.
