Sheffield Wednesday: Owls sign Canary in striker swoop

In news just breaking, Sheffield Wednesday have announced the signing of Norwich striker Gary Hooper on loan until January 17, as per the club website.

The former Celtic player, who moved to Norwich from the Scottish giants in the 2013 summer transfer window for around £4.4m, is seen by Wednesday as an option that has “bolstered their attacking options” and will wear squad number 14 during his time at Hillsborough. In joining the Sheffield outfit, Hooper could very well form a short-term, yet lethal partnership with the Owls’ other frontman in Argentinian Fernando Forestieri.

Across his various clubs, Gary Hooper has proven to be a formidable player in front of goal and has notched 167 goals across 365 appearances in all competitions; these goals coming at the rate of one every 153 minutes. His most productive time was in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic with the prolific striker scoring 63 goals at the rate of one per 121 minutes, as well as providing 24 assists for teammates.

This isn’t the first time that the Sheffield club have shown interest in Hooper with there being reputed interest at the start of the season before the deal fell through. At the time, the Sheffield Star said that a £500,000 loan fee had been agreed between the two clubs with Wednesday also agreeing to pay Hooper’s reputed wages of £32,000 per week. The Star reported that the deal fell through due to the Hooper’s insistence on him being given a VIP box, thought to be worth £30,000 per season, at Hillsborough for the use of his family and friends; this later being denied by Hooper on Twitter.

The striker is unavailable for Wednesday’s game against Arsenal tonight and looks likely to make his debut in Saturday’s game against Nottingham Forest.
