Leeds United, Steve Evans and the Bolton result – Twitter reacts

Well, the footballing side of the affair is over and Leeds United return from their jaunt over to Bolton with one point in a display that will placate rather than excite the Leesd United faithful with Steve Evans describing the performance as frustrating.

The game itself was a relatively scrappy affair that Leeds edged over the duration of the 90 minutes with the main action see-sawing between the two teams with very little end result. Bolton had to bring on new signing Shola Ameobi in the 12th minute of the game to replace injured striker Gary Madine and it was the replacement who opened the scoring on 32 minutes. A Marco Silvestri mistake, from a routine ball in, led to a corner from which the ex-Newcastle forward profited. A ball in to the near post wasn’t dealt with well by Leeds’ defence and debut-boy Ameobi smashed the ball home from just outside the 6-yard box.

Leeds didn’t show much in the remainder of the first half, although they did have brief flurries as the 45 minutes closed out, but they did come out showing much more attacking intent and were bristling with aggression, something sorely missing in the first half. Mirco Antenucci burst forward in the opening minutes of the half, his shot from a tight angle hitting the side netting and somewhat setting the tone of what was to come from Leeds in the second half. Leeds continued to press and Tom Adeyemi was unlucky to see his 20-yard shot hit the post, helped there by the faintest touch from Ben Amos in the Bolton goal – the second time that the midfielder had hit the woodwork. A deserved equaliser for Leeds came on 71 minutes after Mirco Antenucci, through on goal, was brought down by Bolton defender Prince-Desire Gouano, the defender getting a straight red card. Antenucci picked himself up, dusted himself off and duly dispatched the penalty to bring Leeds level. Will Buckley was a late substitute for Stuart Dallas as Leeds pressed to make their extra man count. However, despite working hard, the winning goal wasn’t to come and the game ended as a second consecutive 1-1 draw for the Whites.

With Leeds drawing their second consecutive game, there was much to be said about the performance with Steve Evans leading the way saying, as reported by Phil Hay on Twitter,

“We missed chances at key stages and gave a sloppy goal away. I was very disappointed with the final ball in the last 20 minutes.”

However, the litmus paper test for any Leeds performance comes over on social media where opinion is often sharp, incisive and rarely neutral.
