Chairman becomes temporary Swindon manager

Swindon Town have this morning released a statement on their official website confirming that Lee Chairman Lee Power will be their new temporary manager. They also officially confirmed the departure of Mark Cooper, who was sacked after a run of eight games without a victory.

The statement went on to thank Cooper for his efforts with the club, most notably when leading them to the League One Play-Off Final last season, only to suffer defeat to Preston North End. The main reason for his departure is simply down to performances and results not being ‘as the club had hoped for’. The statement read,

The football club would like to place on record their thanks to Mark for his outstanding work ethic and commitment to the job during his two-and-a-half-year tenure. Mark did a fantastic job which culminated in the club reaching the League One Play-Off Final last season.

Unfortunately, performances and results this term have not been as good as the club had hoped for with the current squad.

It was also revealed that Power is set to take over as the temporary manager, with tomorrow night’s home clash with Oldham Athletic set to be his first game in charge. However it was stressed that Power will not be the permanent manager and that a new man will be brought into the club before the end of the month.

The Chairman, Lee Power thought it was time to make a change and informed Mark of his decision on Saturday night after the defeat at Millwall.

Lee will take temporary charge of the team but will definitely not be the club’s next permanent manager.

The club have already started drawing up a shortlist and plan to have a manager in place by the end of the month.

The current favourite to be the new Swindon boss is former Torquay United, Cambridge United and Leyton Orient manager Martin Ling. He is a short price to replace Cooper, but ex-Sunderland and former Swindon assistant manager Gus Poyet the second favourite.
