Reading FC: Noel Hunt pays tribute to tragic youngster

Noel Hunt may have moved on from Reading in 2013, since appearing for Leeds United, Ipswich and Southend, but he didn’t forget 14-year old Reading fan Matthew Pike who sadly lost his battle with leukaemia yesterday.

Website getreading report (link above) that Hunt got to know Matthew whilst the youngster was undergoing treatment at the Royal Berkshire Hospital during his time at the Madejski Stadium. Upon hearing that Matthew has passed away, the former-Reading and Republic of Ireland star made a heartfelt and emotional response towards the young reading fan in a post on social media. The post itself read,

“To Matthew – One of the bravest, funniest little dudes I knew. I’m very sorry and so sad to see that you have left us. A very loud, proud, loyal Royal that would do anything for his team. He’s sadly gone but will never be forgotten. Through his treatment I remember him saying one of the hardest things for him was not being able to go to some of Reading’s games. That statement alone tells anyone who didn’t know him how strong, brave and passionate he was. He will now never have to miss another game again. In fact, knowing Matthew, he will never miss another training session, team meeting or any Reading home or away game again.

RIP Matthew. Urzzzzzzzzzz”

Reading fans are planning to pay their own tribute for the young Royals fan at today’s game against Charlton by applauding for the duration of the 14th minute of the game. Fans are taking to social media urging all to join in the poignant 60 seconds, sparking the hashtag #MinuteforMatthew on Twitter.

Sometimes events transcend the petty rivalries that exist within football, this is one of those times.
