Ex-Barnsley boss Doncaster appointment imminent

Former Sheffield United and Barnsley manager Danny Wilson has today been installed has the heavy odds-on favourite for the Doncaster Rovers job. The club confirmed last week that a new manager will be in charge for this weekend’s home clash with Bradford City.

55-year-old Wilson has had a heavy connection with Yorkshire football through his career, both as a player and as manager. In his playing days, he ended his career with Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley. He went on to manage those clubs in his managerial career as well, in addition to Sheffield United and a second spell with Barnsley most recently.

Lee Clark and Darren Ferguson were heavily touted as being the two names set to fight out the vacant role at the Keepmoat Stadium. Caretaker Rob Jones remains in charge for now, but a new face is expected to join the club, possibly with Jones remaining as part of their respective coaching staff.

Wilson is part of the elusive ‘1000 Club’ in taking charge of at least 1000 professional matches in his time as a manager. He is in great company with the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Robson, Arsene Wenger, Brian Clough and current England boss Roy Hodgson, alongside many others.

Earlier today the Yorkshire Post broke news of the fact Wilson’s name had emerged as a lively contender to replace Paul Dickov, who departed earlier this season. Now seemingly a flurry of money has been wagered on the man who has managed seven clubs in his career. He has been without a work since being dismissed from his second spell at Barnsley following a 5-1 defeat to Crawley Town in February.

The interview process was concluded yesterday by the Doncaster board. The likes of Wilson, Clark, Ferguson and ex-Notts County boss Shaun Derry and caretaker Jones are believed to have been spoken to. An announcement is expected as early as tomorrow, with the club hoping to appoint a new man to propel them away from the League One relegation zone.
