Bury boss felt referee was ‘making it up’

Bury boss David Flitcroft heavily criticised referee Graham Salisbury following Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Wigan Athletic when speaking to the BBC. He accused the official of applying ‘made up’ rules during the entertaining clash at Gigg Lane.

The hosts stormed into a 2-0 lead against recently relegated Wigan thanks to goals from Nathan Cameron and then Tom Pope on the hour mark. With just over ten minutes remaining, full back Chris Hussey was dismissed for two bookable offences. The Latics then scored two goals in the final five minutes to come away with a point. Former Barnsley manager Flitcroft certainly felt that the performance of the referee had a major impact on the end result,

“The inconsistency of the referee’s performance, he was just making it up in the end.

We talk about the laws of the game, I don’t think they were applied today – I think things were just being made up.”

Flitcroft went on to say that he feels that the refereeing hierarchy in the English game should do more with their officials, especially when it comes to assigning them to respective fixtures,

“The people above him, the people who send these referees, I don’t believe that they’re really thinking about who they’ve got to send to these games.”

Moving on from the performance of the referee, Flitcroft has overseen a superb start to the season following promotion last season. Saturday’s draw denied them the chance to make it eight victories on the bounce, but stepping up a division hasn’t presented any issues,

“Being in League One has been brilliant. I’ve really enjoyed it and I think it has really suited us.

We’ve taken all different teams on – every half is different in this league and it is another massive test for us next week at Rochdale.”
