League Two, Talking Points – League Two

Talking Points – League Two

League Two is, arguably, the tightest and therefore most compelling this season.

At the top, just five points separate the top eight and at the bottom just six points stand between 24th spot and the dizzy heights of 18th.

The safety of 18th is occupied by Crawley Town who have struggled to adapt to life in the fourth tier since their relegation last season.

But with the Broadfield Stadium having only brought disappointment so far this campaign, their first home win of the season finally arrived on Saturday and against opposition who are fancied to return to League One at the first time of asking.

Having started the campaign so well, and putting their fellow League One relegation candidates to shame with five straight wins, the O’s have become inconsistent and slipped to seventh place.

However, it was not an easy win for the Reds as they rode their luck against ten man Orient. At 3-1 up and cruising, Jay Simpson ensured it was a nervy finish at 3-2. Crawley fans would have been forgiven for fearing the worst.

But they held on for an impressive win that gives them some breathing space down the bottom. That sort of result may be just what they need to kick on this season.

The game of the weekend, though, came on Sunday as Exeter took on another side who have struggled to find their feet.

Stevenage under the leadership of high-profile boss, Teddy Sheringham, had lost five matches on the bounce but that duct was broken as they twice came from behind to draw with an in-form Exeter side.

Having been 2-0 down after just 15 minutes, it looked to be the same old story for Borough but Dean Parrett and Ben Kennedy drew the visitors level before the break.

Exeter looked to have won it thanks to David Wheeler’s brilliant finish but in the Chris Whelpdale was on hand to send Stevenage home with a share of the spoils in stoppage time.

Sheringham has not shied away from publicly making his feelings known, regarding his players performances and commitment, but the comeback will please the first time gaffer.

There is little to choose between the in-form top three in the division.

Plymouth, Portsmouth and Oxford all collected three points at the weekend, with Argyle the side with a three point advantage thanks to  Reuben Reid double that secured victory at Notts County.

Pompey saw off Cambridge United 3-1, while Oxford edged out Wimbledon 1-0. With it so tight at the top, it will be all eyes on the teams occupying the play-off spots to see if they can put pressure on the division’s pace setters.

Newport suffered their ninth defeat of the campaign and new boss John Sheridan has much work to do with the basement side who lie three points from safety at this early stage. With the two sides above them playing each other, a result against Mansfield Town would have made the table much happier reading.

But Mansfield were dominant and secured a third win on the bounce with three goals and an important three points that put pressure on the top two.

It is no mystery as to why Dagenham and Yeovil are struggling this season as defensive calamities were at the heart of a 2-2 draw.

Neither side will be particularly happy with a point in their predicament. Daggers took a 2-0 lead in to half time after the Yeovil defence half heatedly cleared the ball twice before Kane Ferdinand eventually nodded home.

The second goal was a special finish from Frankie Raymond and strugglers Yeovil fell victim to boos ringing around Huish Park at the break. Fans vented their frustration as they continue to flirt with the bottom, having been relegated for the last two seasons.

But somehow, the Glovers fought back from 2-0 down for the second time at home this season. Striker, Ryan Bird, headed home his fifth goal of the season before they were handed an equaliser from Daggers keeper Liam O’Brien.

Having looked shaky all afternoon he came to collect a corner and punched the ball away unconvincingly and it bounced into the back of the net. Jakub Sokolik;s back was credited with the goal but he knew little about the finish.

If these two are to have any hope of staying in the division, they will need to sure up their defence as better sides would have punished either side heavily.

Teams that have not been mentioned will no doubt play a huge part in the outcome for this season. This league looks to be the most exciting fourth tier in recent years with anyone beating anyone and both ends of the league being tight.

Watch this space for a few teams to surprise you this season and no doubt one or two will fall away.
