Brown Southend to Sunderland rumour dismissed

Southend United chairman Ron Martin has told Echo News that they haven’t received any offers for manager Phil Brown. The ex-Hull City boss has been linked with a coaching role under new Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce.

56-year-old Brown is no stranger to working with Allardyce as the pair spent time together in the past. Allardyce was Brown’s manager at Blackpool in the mid-1990s, whilst Allardyce and Brown were number one and two during Bolton Wanderer’s rise to the higher echelons of the Premier League.

It is no secret that Allardyce is looking for an assistant manager to help him out at the Stadium of Light. Neil McDonald was his right hand man at West Ham United, but he is now manager of League One side Blackpool and isn’t thought to be considering linking up with Big Sam once again. Martin insists that no approach has been made for Brown and even if there was, the South Shields born boss wouldn’t entertain a move anyway,

“There has been no contact whatsoever.

I don’t understand why there would be either.

Most assistant managers aspire to be managers, not the reverse.”

Brown took over from Paul Sturrock to become manager of the the Essex club back in March 2013. In his two full seasons at Roots Hall, the former Hartlepool and Halifax Town full back reached the play-offs on both occasions. Last season was a more successful attempt, beating Wycombe Wanderers on penalties in the Play-Off final at Wembley Stadium.
