Tuesday’s JPT betting preview

Tonight see’s the return of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and we all know that from a betting perspective it is quite a tricky puzzle to solve. However there is no need to worry as The 72 has all bases covered on that front. On Saturday we provided a 7/1 correct score winning selection, in addition to many more winning bets. We focus on three key games and all odds are taken from our designated bookmaker BeanBagSports.

Fleetwood Town v Shrewsbury Town

It is the worst kept secret that Fleetwood are expected to announce Steven Pressley as their new manager this afternoon. A 4pm press conference has been called and the former Coventry manager will get to see his new side in action as early as this evening. Considering Fleetwood aren’t in the best form in League One, normally they may not play too much significance towards this cup tie. However with a manager looking on, it is amazing how much of a boost that can be to the team. Shrewsbury will be without strikers Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and James Collins and manager Micky Mellon has been using phrases that lead to him not having a too much hope in this competition. Nathaniel Knight-Percival will be rested and all of the positive vibes seem to be coming out of the Fleetwood camp. Without a doubt it is a more important game for them than it is for Shrewsbury. On that basis, we’ll back the Fleetwood victory at 6/4.

Recommended tip: Fleetwood to win (6/4)

Sheffield United v Notts County

In past seasons Sheffield United have used this competition certainly to provide their fringe players with an opportunity to shine. Now under new manager Nigel Adkins, a similar approach is expected. Without a doubt their priority is League One this season and perhaps a cup run in this competition could be something of a distraction. Adkins has already admitted that he will rotate his squad and the likes of Chris Basham, Ryan Flynn and David Edgar are amongst those who will miss out. It could be argued that Notts County are better prepared for this game as they made nine changes for their weekend game. The Magpies have already been to Villa Park this season in the Capital One Cup and took Aston Villa to extra time. They could be a good ‘cup team’ this season considering how big their squad is. That is a mantle Sheffield United has had in recent seasons under Nigel Clough. Notts County boss Ricardo Moniz will relish the chance to test his squad against a League One big boy, especially as he’ll hope to be playing sides like this next season. Moniz said he was surprised that this competition has something of a low-key appreciation in the eyes of many clubs. He will take this seriously so at least backing both teams to score at 4/6 seems a safe option as both teams will ‘have a go’.

Recommend tip: Both teams to score (4/6)

York City v Doncaster Rovers

Rob Jones remains as the caretaker manager of Doncaster and is very much hoping to earn the job on a full time basis. Similar to the Fleetwood game, this match perhaps takes slightly more significance to the team whose manager’s future is far from certain. There have openly invited applicants to come forward for the role but winning games like this will do Jones’ chances no harm at all. He got his first win in charge at the weekend when beating Barnsley at home 2-1. They will be looking to continue in that form and put a run of results together. Players have already come out over the past few weeks in saying that they hope Jones gets the job full-time. York are in a poor run of form, with only one victory in their last nine in all competitions. They were 2-0 up at home to Cambridge on Saturday but were pegged back to draw 2-2. Both teams head into this game with differing mentalities and that will have an effect. Whilst Russ Wilcox will get his team fired up as they welcome a team from a higher level, Doncaster are starting to play the football that Jones wants his teams to play. Jones says he will take this seriously and it is also a big Yorkshire derby as well. On paper there should only be one winner and whilst football isn’t played on paper, at the prices backing Doncaster at 7/5 seems a good enough option to support.

Recommended tip: Doncaster to win (7/5)
