Walsall goalkeeper to use Chelsea tricks against them

Walsall goalkeeper Neil Etheridge is hoping to use some of the tricks he learned at Chelsea against them when the sides meet in the League Cup tonight, according to a report.

Etheridge, who joined Walsall this summer after being released by Charlton Athletic, spent three years at Chelsea between 2003 and 2006.  The Walsall goalkeeper also aims to draw on his experience as a ballboy at the London club.

Etheridge said: “If it’s two minutes to go and we are leading I think I’ll be gesturing to the ballboys to slow it down. That’s the sort of thing we learned at Chelsea — to take our time.”

After leaving Chelsea, Etheridge signed for Fulham where he was loaned out several times and made only one appearance.  The goalkeeper then joined Oldham on a short-term deal before signing for Charlton, who released him in the summer.

Since joining Walsall however, Etheridge has been the club’s first choice goalkeeper, playing nine games this season.

Etheridge also suggested that Chelsea are going wrong this season due to a lack of leaders.  He said: “Maybe that’s what they’re missing on the field, they want someone to take control.”
