Wolves end interest in ex-Newcastle striker

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Kenny Jackett has informed the official club website that they will not be signing free agent striker Shola Ameobi. The former Newcastle man had been training with the Molineux club.

The 33-year-old featured for the Under-21 side for 68 minutes of their 3-2 away defeat to their counterparts from Swansea City. Jackett is now focusing his attentions on the emergency loan market, where Wolves fans can expect some activity in the near future.

Following their 3-0 defeat to Championship rivals Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup last season, ex-Millwall manager Jackett thanked Ameobi for his efforts during his brief spell with the club,

“We are always looking to strengthen and if we can strengthen we will – we do feel we are light in that area.

It won’t be Shola (Ameobi) – we thank him for coming down for a few days but it is not going to go any further.

He has been a credit to himself and I am sure will benefit from the training and the game he has played.”

Ironically yesterday marked five years since Ameobi scored two goals for former club Newcastle in the League Cup as they knocked out current Premier League champions Chelsea 4-3.

He has been without a club since being released by Crystal Palace at the end of last season but did have a spell training with Championship side Huddersfield Town earlier this month.
