Bassett makes history for Yeovil Town

Ollie Bassett made his Football League debut on Saturday but made history for Yeovil Town at the same time, according to the Glovers official website. At 17 years, 6 months and 13 days old, the midfielder is the youngest player to start in the football league for Yeovil, a record previously held by Steven Caulker.

Not only was he handed a debut in a crucial match for Yeovil Town, he was unable to wear an adults shirt nor have the Yeovil Town sponsor of Thatchers cider printed on the back due to his age.

The youth squad member was called into action as the Glovers continue to ride out their injury crisis, that has seen 10 players out of action.

Paul Sturrock was pleased with Bassett’s debut which saw him play 73 minutes.

He said: “He gave it everything. We are asking a 17-year-old lad, who has never tasted anything like that to go out there and play in a very difficult position to learn and he did not look out of sorts.”

Yeovil Town secured a much needed 1-0 victory at Crawley Town on Saturday, thanks to Harry Cornick’s stunning finish.

The match winner, who himself is only 20, was impressed by his new team mates contribution.

He told the club’s site: When he gets on the ball he is great player, you know something is going to happen,” Cornick said.

“He only joined us on Thursday and he tore training up so we can all see he’s got a bit of talent. Hopefully he can keep improving and knuckle down as he has a great future ahead of him.”
