Jones to be given time to earn Doncaster job

The Thorne and District Gazette believe that Doncaster Rovers caretaker Rob Jones has four games to stake a claim for the job on a full-time basis. Also, former Millwall manager Ian Holloway has ruled himself out of the running.

Ex-Leeds United head coach Neil Redfearn remains the current favourite to take over from Paul Dickov, who was sacked following an indifferent start to the season. However the Keepmoat Stadium club have revealed that they set a deadline of September 25th for applications, with interviews taking place the two weeks after that. With that being the case, Jones will have control over the next four games at least.

Holloway recently came out as the number two choice for Doncaster supports in a poll to determine who would take over from Dickov. Jones came out first in that, leading to Holloway telling the Sky Sports Football League podcast that he is happy in his role as television pundit for now,

“I’m enjoying my job with Sky. I promised someone I would stay there as long as I possibly can. I’ve got a year’s contract, I really enjoy it and I don’t like letting people down.

I will never say never (to a return to management) because I’m a football manager and I’d probably like to get to 1,000 games but at the moment my enthusiasm for what I’m learning week in, week out is excellent.”

Another interesting mover in the betting is former Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson. His old club are currently looking for a manager but he has revealed he won’t return for a third spell. He has been attending matches in recent times and it remains to be seen if he has indeed applied for the role at Doncaster. However Jones appears to have the backing of the fans and a run of positive results in the next four games will give him a serious chance of earning his job as a manager.
