Barnsley, Birmingham aim to sign Barnsley defender

Birmingham aim to sign Barnsley defender

According to a report by The Sun, Birmingham boss Gary Rowett is aiming to sign Barnsley defender Marc Roberts.

This will be the third attempt Rowett has made to sign the defender, after having tracked Roberts for some time, including the time before he signed for Barnsley.

Roberts, 25, has played for multiple Non-League sides, including Wakefield, Worsop Town, Buxton and Halifax Town.  His best spell was at Halifax from 2013 onwards where he the defender made 93 appearances, scoring 10 goals.

Rowett tracked the defender during this time but the good form instead earned Roberts a move to League 1 side Barnsley in May 2015.  Since signing for Barnsley on a free transfer, Roberts has made 8 appearances for the club.

According to the report, Birmingham will be looking at a loan-to-buy bid for Roberts meaning they can sign the player straight away and then pay his transfer fee in the next transfer window.
