Mistakes cost us the win claims Carlos Carvalhal

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal claimed that mistakes cost his side in Saturday’s 3-1 loss against Burnley, and he believed that the Owls could have secured the three points at Turf Moor, the Sheffield Star reports.

A David Jones strike opened the scoring for the hosts before Atdhe Nuhiu pulled Wednesday back level. The game was in the balance before goals from Matthew Taylor and Andre Gray gave Burnley a 3-1 victory against the South Yorkshire side.

With Burnley taking the lead in the 78th minute, Carvalhal admits that one point was not enough for his side following their performance. The Sheffield Star quotes the Owls boss as saying “If you ask me if I’m happy with the draw, probably I would say I’m a little upset with the draw.”

Despite the performance, Carvalhal realises that this does not mean it guarantees victory. “The reality is that we lost a match that we played very well and we created a lot of chances,” the 49-year-old said after the game, “I believe everyone in the stadium, in a big period of the second half, was waiting for the second goal of Sheffield Wednesday. But this is football.”

“The quality of the game was very good. We missed some chances so we must do better in efficiency and of course we must correct the defensive mistakes that we did and we can’t do these kind of defensive mistakes.

Carvalhal goes onto admit that it was mistakes that cost him his side the victory, and recognises that Burnley were clinical in the chances they were presented with. “We started the game very well, the first time that Burnley go to our goal with the free-kick, they score,” he said.

“In the second half we played much more offensively in midfield. We missed clear chances to score but in the one or two mistakes that we did, Burnley got the goals.”

The defeat leaves Wednesday in 19th place in the Sky Bet Championship after just one win in their first six. The Owls have lost three of their last five league matches.
