Dunn appointed Oldham manager as fan frustration grows

Oldham Athletic have this morning confirmed that David Dunn will be their new manager on an interim basis following the dismissal of Darren Kelly last night.

Dunn joined the club as a player this summer, however rumours were rife from the word ‘go’ that he had been brought in primarily to replace Kelly once the inevitable happened. A former England international and Blackburn Rovers legend, the 35 year old has plenty of on-field experience, however he enters the managers hot seat for the first time; adhering to Oldham’s seeming policy of appointing rookies.

The appointment is bound to raise a few eyebrows amongst fans as the cry for experience following the car-crash appointment of Darren Kelly has been ignored. Chairman Simon Corney has been criticised for going for a cheap option in the past and recruiting from within this time will not sit well with the Oldham faithful. This, added to the knowledge that club legends John Sheridan and Neil Redfearn are without jobs, will inevitably cause a further stir within the camp at a time when the club can hardly afford to alienate any more fans.

Further eyebrows will be raised following the club’s statement which confirmed Dunn will have the job only on an interim basis. What this quite means is anyone’s guess but will only lead to further uncertainty as to the direction in which the club is heading.

Yet most disturbing about the whole managerial saga is the way in which the board have treated former manager Darren Kelly. It was no secret that Dunn was brought in in the summer in order to be groomed as Kelly’s replacement and this has been confirmed today. This complete undermining of Kelly was hugely disrespectful and surely made his position as manager wholly untenable.

Regardless, Latics must now soldier on with another rookie manager at the helm. David Dunn will be carrying the hopes and wishes of all Oldham fans but he’ll also carry the burden of huge frustration and annoyance. How Dunn will cope is anyone’s guess but there is no doubting that fans will be left disappointed yet again with this news.
