Robbie Fowler applies for Peterborough job

The Peterborough Telegraph has today confirmed that former Liverpool and England striker Robbie Fowler is amongst the list of names to have applied for the vacant Peterborough United manager’s role.

40-year-old Fowler is looking to make significant strides into management since officially retiring from playing in January of this year. He is currently coaching in the Liverpool Academy and has had previous coaching roles with MK Dons, Bury and briefly with Thailand club Muangthong United.

Early favourite for the role Steve Evans has been bypassed in the betting by former Reading and Leeds United manager Brian McDermott. Owner Darragh MacAnthony said on Twitter that he is ‘absolutely not’ looking to approach Evans to take over at London Road.

It is highly unlikely that Fowler will be successful in his bid to become the new Posh boss, as MacAnthony favours a more experienced manager at the helm. One other name that is believed to have handed in his CV is Ian Culverhouse, who has most recently been assistant manager at Norwich City and Aston Villa.

The Peterborough owner gave his verdict on various other managers last night when exchanging views with supporters on Twitter. Another early favourite for the job was Graham Westley, but he has been ruled out of contention. In addition to Evans, MacAnthony ruled out ambitious candidates such as Stuart Pearce, Nigel Pearson and Ian Holloway. Interestingly, he refused to comment on former Coventry City manager Steven Pressley.

MacAnthony praised current Arsenal chief scout McDermott in the same conversations and is expected to have been one of the people that had phone interviews with the owner yesterday. However the owner did acknowledge that he is in a ‘very good job’ at this moment in time. Assistant Grant McCann will lead the team for tomorrow’s league clash against Oldham Athletic.
