Leeds United September Preview

After the hustle and and bustle of August it’s nice to be in September, the first full month of the football calendar. No more new signings to save your club if you’re sinking, this is when the real football starts!

Leeds’ September starts with 2 difficult home games in 4 days.

September 12th – Brentford (H)

Leeds’ first 3pm Saturday KO of the year and it will be nice to be back where football belongs, however it won’t be easy against a tricky Brentford side. A side that beat Leeds home and away last season. The Bees have had a difficult start to the season, only taking 4 points from their first 5 games (W1 D1 L2) and that was a scrappy win vs Bristol City. The loss of Andre Gray will hurt Brentford massively and we might not be seeing the play off campaign of last season. Brentford need to pick up their form of they’re going to enjoy a decent season, but with the sale of their main talents in the summer, I can see them continuing to struggle going into September.

September 15th – Ipswich (H)

The second home game in a week sees the visit of Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich to Elland Road. A team which saw Leeds get heavily beaten 4-1 away from home, but pulled off an impressive 2-1 home win in March. The Tractor boys have enjoyed a great start to the season, taking 10 points from 15 available (W3 D1 L1). Although they were both beaten semi finalists Ipswich will prove a much tougher test than Brentford, mainly because they have kept their star players. David McGoldrick and Daryl Murphy are 2 of the championships top strikers. Leeds will need to play a strong defensive game and hit Ipswich in their weaker defence if we stand any chance of taking a result in this match.

September 19th – MK Dons (A)

Leeds face a tricky away trip down to Milton Keynes in the middle of September. With Dons sitting on 7 points (W2, D1, L1) however their home form leaves much to be questioned. Both their defeats so far have come at home, against Preston and Birmingham and MK look a lot stronger away from home. Leeds need to take advantage of their poor form at home and really go on the attack. Hit their defence with everything we have and put a few goals past the Dons.

September 27th – Middlesborough (A)
Leeds are one of not many teams to have done the double over the defeated play off finalists. 1-0 wins home and away means that Leeds have an impressive form vs the Teesiders. Even with not renewing the loan of star man Patrick Bamford Boro still have made a steady start to the season (W2, D2, L1) and Leeds will have to be at their best to get a result! Boro have strengthened well and should be in and around the play offs in May. Leeds need to do exactly what they did home and away last season. Defend like their lives depend on it and try and keep out the likes of Kike. Then try and nick a goal either early on or right at the death.

Leeds United have a tricky September. Playing all 3 defeated play off teams from last season and an up and coming side who played very well in League 1 last season. I think if they are still unbeaten by this time next month then we really do have a chance of hitting the heights this season. But with playing teams who have as much quality as Ipswich and Middlesborough I think it’s unlikely. Starting the month on 5 points I think the target should be to take 7 points from the 12 available and still be in the top half going into October.
