New signing Barry Bannan has told BBC Radio Sheffield that the Owls are looking to gain promotion from the Championship.

Bannan, 25, signed a one-year contract at Hillsborough after being released by Crystal Palace before the end of the transfer window.

The Scottish international was Wednesday’s 15th summer signing and he  has wasted no time in making his intentions clear. He told Radio Sheffield:

“It’s a sleeping giant in the Championship and I think the new owners will give it the kick to get back to the Premier League. They’ve brought a lot of players in this summer who are all good.

“The ambition is to get to the Premier League as quickly as possible and hopefully I can be a big part of that.

“The potential is there and once everyone gets used to playing together I think we will be there or thereabouts.”

Sheffield Wednesday have made a slow start to the season winning just one of their opening five games, that coming against Bristol City on the opening day of the season.

Bannan tweeted his delight at signing for the Owls (see below) and having had spells at Aston Villa after progressing through the academy and Crystal Palace in the Premier League he provides experience to the Wednesday squad.

Bannan has played 20 times for Scotland, but was not included in their squad for the upcoming EURO qualifiers. The midfielder could make his debut for Sheffield Wednesday next weekend at Burnley.
